Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
