Space Traveler Discloses Depression After Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
